Democrats bet Obama-bashing in Iowa will backfire on GOP

In Iowa, the daily bombardment of criticism aimed at President Barack Obama seems to have no end.

?The United States has failed miserably to secure our border,? GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry said in Muscatine the other day.

At about the same time, fellow Republican Mitt Romney was blasting Obama for creating what he called an ?entitlement society? that is making people more government-dependent.

?We will not surrender our dreams to the failures of this president,? Romney said just days before the Jan. 3 Iowa presidential caucuses.

But if Iowa Democrats are discouraged, they hide it well. In interview after interview, they insist that the pounding from Republicans is backfiring and will motivate a Democratic base that?s been dormant for months. They said they are confident Obama will win the state in November.

?We?re getting fired up for our caucuses,? said Pat Sass, chairwoman of the Black Hawk County Democratic Party. ?I think he (Obama) will do just fine. These Republicans are going on and on, and so much of it is lies. I don?t think it?s going to be a problem at all.?

Sass said she had commitments from more than 1,000 county voters to attend the Jan. 3 Democratic caucuses, which are receiving far less attention than the Republican contest because Obama is unchallenged. Eight Republicans are vying to win the GOP caucuses the same night.

Sass said getting attendance commitments from those 1,000 hasn?t been hard. ?We?re fired up and ready to go,? she said.

Although Obama beat Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential election in Iowa by 54 percent to 44 percent, his 2012 prospects remain tougher to project.

?You?ve got a lot of Democrats saying, ?I wish he would just lead and get up there and fight back,??? said Drake University political scientist Dennis Goldford. ?There?s that sort of disappointment there.?

Much depends on whom the Republicans eventually nominate, he said. Obama?s ?still in a position where he?s got to fight for it here,? Goldford said.

A University of Iowa Hawkeye Poll released Dec. 15 showed two GOP front-runners, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, holding slight leads over Obama in a state where the jobless rate just dropped from 6 percent to 5.7 percent in November.

In a sample of nearly 1,000 registered Iowa voters, Gingrich led Obama by 46 percent to 43 percent, with 11 percent undecided, while Romney led Obama 43 percent to 42 percent with 15 percent undecided.

Although Iowa offers only six Electoral College votes next year (down from seven in 2008), it?s a state that many Democratic analysts believe Obama must carry to remain in the White House.

Obama?s campaign appears to understand Iowa?s significance. While Republican candidates in the state have no more than one office each, Obama?s Organizing for America already has eight, including one in Sioux City in far western Iowa, and another in Dubuque on the state?s eastern border.

Organizing for America said it has already held more than 1,000 training and planning sessions, house parties and phone banks across the state and has made more than 250,000 phone calls to supporters.

It also has announced that the president will speak with Iowa supporters on caucus night via a live webcast that will be seen at caucus sites across the state.

?This is another opportunity for President Obama to reach out and speak directly to voters on the ground in Iowa,? said Obama?s Iowa state director, Derek Eadon.

Obama backers insist that the effort now under way will remain in operation all the way through the 2012 election.

?We?ve built a grass-roots campaign,? said Iowa Organizing for America spokesman John Kraus. ?Look at where we?ll be on Jan. 4 looking forward to next November compared to where the Republicans are going to be, which is shutting off the lights, leaving town and going to another state.?

Goldford said all the organizing will help Obama.

?Their task is to get the base enthused again and especially get the independents back,? he added.

Nationwide, turnout among Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections plummeted far more than it did among Republicans compared to 2008, Goldford noted.

?What the Obama people have to do is make the 2012 electorate a lot more like the 2008 electorate than the 2010 electorate,? he pointed out.

If raw enthusiasm is any indicator, Iowa Democrats think they?re already in a good place. While they won?t match the 240,000 or so Democrats who turned out for the 2008 caucus when Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards fought for the nomination, they think they?ll post solid numbers on Jan. 3.

In Dubuque County, Democratic chair Walt Pregler expects as many as 1,500 Democrats to turn out on caucus night. That?s nothing compared to four years ago, he said, but not bad considering how aggressively Republicans have attacked the president over the last four years.

?It has devastated him,? Pregler said of the barrage of criticism. ?But it?s going to take a lot of people on the Republican side to try to explain all the boo-boos they?ve made trying to block everything he?s wanted.?

Jennifer Herrington, chair of the Democratic Party in Page County near Iowa?s southwest corner, expects a 100-person turnout. She said the evening will be a celebration of the president?s accomplishments. ?We?re excited,? she said.

Herrington and Pregler said Obama?s cause might be helped if he visited the state shortly before the caucuses just as President Bill Clinton did in 1996, two days before that year?s caucuses.

Clinton, eager to counter all the criticism aimed his way by GOP candidates such as Bob Dole, spoke to a crowd of 15,000 at the University of Iowa and reminded them that, ?This election fundamentally is about you, and don?t you ever forget it.?

No such in-the-flesh visit from Obama is planned, which doesn?t bother Anita Martin, chair of the Marion County Democratic Party. ?People I talk to are very enthusiastic about him and realize the problems he?s been going through,? she said. ?I don?t get out and talk to that many people who are not Obama fans.?

Ponder returns to practice for Vikings

BC-FBN--Vikings-Quarterbacks, 2nd Ld-Writethru,745Ponder returns to practice for Vikings, will startAP Photo FDX101, FDX107, FDX109Eds: Updates with details, quotes. With AP Photos.By JON KRAWCZYNSKIAP Sports Writer

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) ? Christian Ponder stood at the podium with a nasty cut on his nose and a noticeable laceration on his right hand.

He took quite a beating last weekend against the Washington Redskins, who knocked him out of the game in the third quarter with a concussion.

That comes with the territory as an NFL quarterback, and Ponder has passed all the necessary tests and is ready to come back for more against Chicago on Sunday. Ponder saw a neurologist on Tuesday and was cleared to play, so he will start in the season finale.

"I guess I actually scored higher on my baseline tests so maybe I got some sense knocked into me," Ponder deadpanned on Wednesday after returning to practice.

All joking aside, the game against the Bears will be an important one for the rookie, whose performance has leveled off in recent weeks after a promising beginning as the Vikings starter. The game against the Redskins was tied at 10 when linebacker London Fletcher knocked Ponder out with a crunching hit.

It's the second concussion Ponder has had in his football career, he said.

Webb played superbly in Ponder's place, completing 4 of 5 passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 34 yards and another score to lead the Vikings to just their third victory of the season.

It was the second time in the last three weeks that Webb, a sixth-round draft pick in his second season, has come in and played better than Ponder, the No. 12 overall pick in April's draft. Webb replaced an ineffective Ponder in the second half against Detroit on Dec. 11 and scored on a 65-yard run and threw another TD pass to rally the Vikings from a 21-0 deficit. The comeback fell short when he fumbled a snap just a few yards from the end zone, but he has started to gain consideration that he is more than just a backup quarterback and occasional receiver.

"Each time Joe has gotten in the ball game, he's really given us a spark and really got some things going," coach Leslie Frazier said on Monday. "It's something that we'll have to talk about and discuss when this season is over and we're going to try and get him more snaps in the Chicago game if we can."

By Wednesday, with Ponder in the clear, Frazier was more definitive that the rookie remains atop the depth chart. He said he saw progress on Sunday before Ponder was injured.

"I think you always want to do whatever is best for your team and whatever gives your team the best chance to win," Frazier said. "Right now, Christian being our starting quarterback, that's our belief."

Webb's poise, athleticism and performance has impressed Ponder, who knows that he has to keep improving to hold on to his starting spot.

"There's always pressure to perform. This is the NFL and you always have to perform otherwise your job is going to be taken away," he said. "But I think it's a positive thing. Whenever there's competition I think you're always going to get better. Obviously Joe is a heck of a player and has done a great job. That's going to motivate me more to make my job secure and try to play better."

Ponder took two nasty hits against the Redskins, including a 15-yard penalty from safety Reed Doughty for hitting Ponder while he was sliding. The helmet-to-helmet contact left quite a mark.

"My modeling career's out the window," Ponder quipped. "I got busted up. I was bleeding everywhere. ... Fun times."

Sunday marks the final chance this season for Ponder to build some momentum going into the offseason against the Bears 28th-ranked passing defense.

"Especially for me, personally, I want to finish strong and have some momentum going into the offseason," Ponder said. "Looking back on the games I've played in, I've got a lot of film to show that I have a lot to work on and get better at. It'd be great to finish on a positive note."

Greenway's Lead The Way Foundation helps families in financial and medical need and he also works with Memorial Blood Centers, Sanford Hospital and the University of Minnesota's Amplatz Childrens' Hospital, among other endeavors. ... WR Percy Harvin received the Korey Stringer Good Guy Award for his cooperation with the media.

Looking for partners for interesting role plays

Hey there,

I'm Akira and I've been role playing for a little more two years now. I'm looking for a few people to start role playing with. I'm usually good at coming up with ideas but like having someone to bump those ideas off of and forming a greater role play with; Like a snowball. :D I'm pretty laid back, at least I like to think so, but I like planning so everyone is on the same page. I'm a little shy so I love it when people speak their minds. :3
I usually write four paragraphs and up. I've had up to eight characters before but prefer around four. I certainly don't mind groups, in fact, I really like them since that means even more people to throw ideas in and make it unique. I usually have male characters but may throw a female in there time to time. I'm fine with pretty much any gender/type relationship.
I am a high school student, currently on break, so there is a good chunk of the day I can't reply but will once I get home. Also, my cat likes to try to type. ^.^;

Role plays I'm interested in

Asylum - about to have one going but willing to start another
Horror - gore, gore, death, torture, gore. X3
Fantasy - Modern, Dark, Medieval, etc
Sci-fi - Like 'Mass Effect' and such
    Romance
    Realism
    Music
    Mythological
    Dante's Inferno
MMORPG based - taking part in both 'real life' and in the game.
Fandoms - There is a lot so just ask :3

There is a lot more I'd be willing to do but those are just my top few. If you have any ideas and want to throw them my way feel free. I'm open to most ideas.

Here's an idea I had:

Two males in their early twenties enter the life of prostitution. After a few years of working, one gets tired, numbs, and sick of the lifestyle. Something snaps in him and he begins killing females within a certain age group.

    1. The other male could go along with it and help him in murdering many women

    2. It could be unknown to the other male and they remain friends until he finds out

    3. The other male could find out early on and try to get him to stop

Fire Emblem To Set Japan Ablaze Next Spring

3:30AM Today | Brian Ashcraft

Last night, Nintendo held the second of its Nintendo Direct online press conferences. In it, the Kyoto-based game creator confirmed several Japanese release dates. One of them was new ? the one for Fire Emblem.

While Nintendo did confirm Japanese release dates for titles like Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D (Mar. 8, which we knew), it also gave new release dates for Shin Sangoku Musou Vs., or rather Dynasty Warriors Musou Vs. (Mar. 15, which we didn?t).

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream, Drop Distance, once again, was given a wide release window. Once again, March was penciled in for its Japanese release ? just as it was earlier this month.

The one game that stood out was the eagerly awaited Fire Emblem 3DS title. That game will be out Apr. 19 in Japan. Yesterday, news broke that Fire Emblem will be the first 3DS game to have DLC for sale. According to the Nikkei report, Nintendo will begin moving forward with DLC in March, making it appear as though the game was dated for that same month.

Fire Emblem will be out on the 3DS in April ? the 19th to be exact.

Politcs Plus: GOP,you might have a Ron Paul problem

?

GOP,you might have a Ron Paul problem

Image

The Republican Party, Fox News, and Karl Rove, will throw everything but the kitchen sink at Ron Paul, as they have if the congressman wins Iowa. As things stand now, a Ron Paul win in Iowa would neutralize Newt Gingrich thereby helping Mitt Romney, who is leading in New Hampshire. That's conventional wisdom, but this race is anything but that. The establishment Republicans do not want Ron Paul to gain any momentum or for him to upset the apple cart. The establishment GOP wants the race to be between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney. The Democrats can play a little mischief by voting for Ron Paul in the Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire Primary.

Iowa is not known as a bellwether state because the winner of that state's caucus hardly ever gets the nomination. South Carolina has been known as the state that sorts it all out for Republicans. The Iowa Caucus is still important because it's the first state to vote, and the winner gets the momentum and cash donations going into New Hampshire; and some candidates will drop out if they don't meet their expectations or have the necessary funds to continue. Ron Paul should win the Iowa Caucus; afterall he set up camp in that state a long time ago, and he has a large staff there. Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have hardly stepped into that state. Newt Gingrich lost his lead in Iowa due to the daily negative ads by Romney and Paul. According to the pollsters, Gingrich's points were divided amongst Bachmann, Perry and Santorum. Today's money to win Iowa is on Ron Paul but everyone is still in the ball game meaning that second, third and forth place have some meaning.

Ron Paul has been a thorn in the GOP's side for a long time, but he knows America will never elect a Libertarian, so he picked the GOP as a marriage of convenience. Ron Paul's nonintervention or isolationist views are not in line with the Republican Party. Ron Paul's stance on Iran getting a nuclear weapon is not a popular position in either party or the majority of our citizens. Most Americans are with Ron Paul on Iraq and Afghanistan, but they don't agree that we should ignore the obvious threats around us. Last night I heard John McCain's old campaign manager, Steve Schmidt, say that Ron Paul's views on Iran scare the GOP because Obama will come into the debates with an upper hand on foreign policy, so saying it's OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon will not sit well with the undecided.

Karl Rove and the others who are considered part of the establishment GOP are looking ahead past this election and Ron Paul or the Tea Party are not part of the plans. Despite a terrible economy, the GOP establishment thinks that only Mitt Romney (even though they don't like him or trust him) has a chance to beat President Obama....Don't get me wrong the Democrats really want to win, but the Republicans need to win.

It's a good chance that the economy will improve by 2014, and if the healthcare gets by the Supreme Court, all the troops will be out of Afghanistan, and if things get back to normal; the next democratic nominee like a Governor Cuomo of New York, will stand an excellent chance against the best Republicans throw at them.

If the Republican candidate fails against Obama; it will throw the Republican Party into a tailspin; tea party vs. establishment. There's the reason they don't want Ron Party to run in a third party, and they will do everything to try to keep him in the GOP. The most effective third-party candidate, Ross Perot, got ~20% of the Vote elevating Bill Clinton to the presidency. This election will be tight, knowing that, will Ron Paul want to leave politics knowing he helped President Obama win a second term? Democrats still haven't forgotten Ralph Nader for Al Gore's loss.

If President Obama wins, he would most likely have presidential coattails helping to regain the house and maintaining the Senate. The next president would likely appoint two replacement Supreme Court judges and set the course for the years to come.

I think the race is still unpredictable but it just gives us something to discuss. I still think it will probably be Romney v Obama without a brokered convention because Romney will have the necessary delegates come convention time, August, 27, 2012 in Tampa, Florida. I?m pretty sure we will have third party candidates as usual but they will not influence the election. What do I know and I?ve been wrong before; I?m just an outside observer having fun.

This is my last blog until after Christmas,so Merry Christmas,Happy Hanukkah and Happy Holidays to all.

(AP) ? Czechs and world leaders paid emotional tribute to Vaclav Havel on Friday at a pomp-filled funeral ceremony, ending a week of public grief and nostalgia over the death of the dissident playwright who led the 1989 revolution that toppled four decades of communist rule.

Bells tolled from churches while a wailing siren brought the country to a standstill in a minute of silence for the nation's first democratically-elected president after the nonviolent "Velvet Revolution."

Havel's wife Dagmar, family members, friends and leaders from dozens of countries gathered Friday at the towering, gothic St. Vitus Cathedral which overlooks Prague. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron were among some 1,000 mourners who bowed their heads in front of the coffin draped in the Czech colors.

Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who was Havel's political archrival, and two friends ? Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg and former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright ? paid tribute to Havel at the cathedral, which dates to the 10th century and has not witnessed a state funeral since 1875.

"We will terribly miss him but we will never, ever forget him," said Albright, who is of Czech origin, in Czech.

In a message read at the funeral by the Vatican's former diplomatic representative in Prague, Pope Benedict XVI praised Havel. "Remembering how courageously Mr. Havel defended human rights at a time when these were systematically denied to the people of your country, and paying tribute to his visionary leadership in forging a new democratic polity after the fall of the previous regime, I give thanks to God for the freedom that the people of the Czech Republic now enjoy," he said.

At the end of the ceremony, 21 cannon salvos were fired when the Czech national anthem was played.

People were applauding when Havel's coffin was then carried by a military honor guard through the cathedral's Golden Gate to Prague's Strasnice crematorium for a private family funeral. The urn with Havel's ashes will be buried at his family's plot at the city's Vinohrady cemetery alongside his first wife, Olga, who died in 1996.

Havel, whose final term in office ended in 2003, died Sunday morning in his sleep at his weekend home in the country's north. The 75-year-old former chain-smoker had a history of chronic respiratory problems dating back to his time in prison.

Since his death, Czechs have gathered spontaneously to lay flowers and light candles at key historic sites such as the monument to the 1989 Velvet Revolution in downtown Prague, and at Wenceslas Square, where Havel once spoke before hundreds of thousands of people to express outrage at the repressive communist regime.

Similar scenes of remembrance played out across the country ? in a show of emotion not seen since the 1937 funeral of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, Czechoslovakia's first president after the nation was founded in 1918.

"Europe owes Vaclav Havel a profound debt," Cameron said before departing from London. "Havel led the Czech people out of tyranny ... and he helped bring freedom and democracy to our entire continent."

Czechs packed a nearby courtyard at Prague Castle and an adjacent square to watch the funeral ceremony on giant screens.

"He was our star, he gave us democracy," said Iva Buckova, 51, who had traveled from the western city of Plzen. "He led us through revolution. We came to see him for the last time."

Prague Archbishop Dominik Duka, who spent time in jail with Havel under Communism, was leading the funeral mass. He was joined by Vatican envoy Giovanni Coppa and bishop Vaclav Maly, Havel's friend and fellow dissident. Poland's former President Lech Walesa ? who led the anti-communist Solidarity movement ? also attended.

The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra performed parts of Requiem by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak throughout the ceremony.

Braving the freezing cold, thousands of mourners have waited in long lines every day since Monday to file past Havel's coffin.

Several thousand people joined Havel's widow, relatives and friends in a somber procession through the capital Wednesday as Havel's body was transported to the Prague Castle.

In his final years, Havel made only occasional public appearances, and would often say that he had insufficient time to resume his literary work.

The director of the theater where he began as a stagehand in 1958 before becoming a playwright ? and where he said he spent the best 8 years of his life ? told AP he'd started work on one last play this year. It was to be called "Sanatorium."

"He may be able to finish it in heaven," said the director of Na Zabradli, Doubravka Svobodova.

ECB bond buys few bonds for second week (AP)

FRANKFURT, Germany ? The European Central Bank held its bond purchases to a bare euro19 million ($24.8 million) this week.

The scant amount indicates that the bank has for now almost ceased the controversial program which has helped keep borrowing costs down for Italy and Spain.

It bought a minimal euro3.36 million last week. That makes two weeks of near-negligible purchases, following euro635 million the week ending Dec. 9 and euro3.66 billion the week ending Dec. 2.

The program has helped keep Italy and Spain from financial disaster from high borrowing costs. But the ECB says it is of limited amount and duration and that it is up to governments to cut their deficits and not wait for a central bank bailout.

McCoy's concussion prompts NFL changes (AP)

BEREA, Ohio ? Browns quarterback Colt McCoy still hasn't shaken symptoms from a concussion sustained nearly two weeks ago, one that has reformed the NFL's game-day procedures on head injuries.

McCoy was not cleared to practice again on Wednesday, keeping him sidelined since he was illegally blasted in the face mask by Pittsburgh's James Harrison on Dec. 8. Browns coach Pat Shurmur said McCoy was evaluated by team doctors and did "a little physical activity" as he continues to recover.

McCoy has not been seen at the team's training facility this week. The second-year QB, who has displayed immense toughness while being roughed up all season, will miss his second straight game Saturday at Baltimore. Backup Seneca Wallace will start against the Ravens, although Shurmur has not made that announcement official.

Wallace doesn't know Cleveland's plans beyond this week.

"I just get ready," he said. "Colt started the season, he should finish the season as the starter if he's healthy. All the other stuff will take care of itself."

The Browns are being extra careful in their treatment of McCoy. It was their failure to check him for a concussion on the field or sideline at Heinz Field that prompted the league to institute a policy of having an independent certified trainer, paid by the NFL, in the press box at games to monitor for head injuries and help identify players who need to be tested.

The league said the trainer will not diagnose or prescribe treatment and can't order players be removed from a game. The trainer will be in a booth upstairs with access to video replay and direct communication to the medical staffs of both teams.

Also, the league will allow medical personnel to use their cell phones during games to get information to help any injured player, not just those with head injuries. In a statement announcing the changes, the league stressed the importance of communication between coaching and medical staffs and urged that "concussions continue to be managed in a conservative and medically appropriate way."

McCoy wasn't tested for a concussion until after the loss to the Steelers, and was sent back into the game after missing just two plays. The Browns said McCoy wasn't showing symptoms of a concussion so they didn't test him. Also, team doctors were treating other players and didn't see the impact from Harrison's vicious hit, which earned the Steelers' linebacker a one-game suspension he served in Pittsburgh's loss to San Francisco on Monday.

Harrison returned to practice on Wednesday and delivered another shot on the Browns. He believes they should be disciplined for their handling of McCoy.

"If he was hurt so bad I don't know why they let him back in the next two plays later," Harrison said. "Something should be done to them I would think. I got a game, what should they get?"

League spokesman Greg Aiello said the Browns will not be penalized for their handling of McCoy's injury.

The Steelers will finish the regular season at Cleveland on Jan. 1.

Shurmur was vague when he was asked if McCoy had visited any specialists on head trauma. Tight end Benjamin Watson sought outside medical advice last week after suffering his third concussion since July. The Browns, who have had eight players sustain concussions, placed him on injured reserve Friday.

"You can't say he hasn't seen one," Shurmur said. "He's been evaluated just like Ben, by all the proper people. They're all doctors. No real difference."

Browns Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas believes adding a trainer as an observer is a good thing.

"Anything they can do to protect player safety is always a positive," Thomas said. "Is it perfect? I don't know. Maybe. Is it better than nothing? I think so."

The league's medical staff and Players Association had input into the changes following their meeting with the Browns last week to discuss McCoy's post-injury treatment. Commissioner Roger Goodell took part in the talks via teleconference as did Browns president Mike Holmgren.

Notes: The Browns are battered as they near the finish line of another losing season. Starting CB Joe Haden (thigh) and WRs Mohamed Massaquoi (foot) and Jordan Norwood (head) missed practice Wednesday. Also out were DL Scott Paxson (hand; calf), LB Ben Jacobs (head) and S T.J. Ward (foot) sat out. Ward has missed six straight games and is unlikely to play next week. .... Shurmur said there's a good chance rookie DB Buster Skrine will return kickoffs this week in place of WR Josh Cribbs, who was limited in practice by a groin injury. Skrine returned one kick 32 yards last week. ... Shurmur expects newly signed TE Dan Gronkowski to play this week. The Browns are short on run blockers following the loss of Watson and Alex Smith. "We're teaching him the game plan, not the system," Shurmur said.

Snowstorm halts travel in New Mexico, moves east (AP)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? A powerful storm dumped heavy snow across sections of the Southwest and Great Plains Monday, stranding motorists in New Mexico in whiteout conditions and wreaking havoc on holiday travel just two days before the start of winter.

Blizzard warnings forecasting snowfalls of up to 18 inches stretched across the region as the storm barreled through New Mexico toward the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles and parts of Kansas and Colorado. In southern Colorado, blizzard conditions were expected to drop between 8 and 16 inches of snow.

In northern New Mexico, all roads from Raton to the Texas and Oklahoma borders about 90 miles east were closed, and an unknown number of motorists were stuck in a blizzard along rural highways, Clayton police dispatcher Cindy Blackwell said. A portion of Interstate 25, the major route heading northeast of Santa Fe into Colorado, was among the roads closed, and even where highways remained open, some drivers were forced to pull off.

"The phones are ringing off the hook" with calls from stranded drivers, Blackwell said. "All I can do is answer the phones and call the state police."

Snow and strong winds also created blizzard-like conditions in far western Kansas and the Oklahoma Panhandle as the storm moved east.

Vicki Roberts, the owner of the Black Mesa Bed and Breakfast in Kenton, said snow was falling rapidly and high winds had cut visibility in the Oklahoma Panhandle.

"I can't even see the mesa," Roberts said as she peered from the window of her establishment at the foot of Black Mesa, which at 4,973 feet is the highest point in Oklahoma. Forecasts called for the area to get up to 16 inches before the storm moves out Tuesday.

The storm follows a surprisingly mild Sunday across the region. In the Oklahoma Panhandle, residents enjoyed relatively balmy 60-degree temperatures. That changed quickly, and Roberts said Monday morning that she expected to be stuck inside at least through Wednesday if a blizzard was as bad as forecast.

"I have a mail route and I'm not going. You just don't get out in this," Roberts said. "We'll be socked in here. If we lose power we'll just read a book in front of the fireplace."

There were no guests at her inn, so she wasn't worried about them being stuck.

Kansas still had temperatures in the upper 40s on Monday, and thunderstorms moved across the state. Conditions were expected to deteriorate as the day progressed and temperatures fell. Snow was expected to start in the western part of the state overnight.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation said Sunday that crews would work around the clock to keep roads clear, and that they have about 130,000 tons of a salt and sand mixture at their disposal.

The precipitation also could help ease a drought that has plagued Texas for more than year.

"You're not going to find too many people who have to put in winter wheat in this area complaining," said Tabatha Seymore, observing program leader for the National Weather Service in Amarillo, Texas. "It's just wonderful to have this moisture to sit on top of the crop and melt. It's fantastic for them."

Amarillo had rain Monday morning, and snow was supposed to start in the afternoon with several inches of accumulation by Tuesday morning.

Long haul truck driver Frank Pringle stopped at a Love's Travel Stop in Amarillo but said he intended to go as far west as road conditions would allow Monday. His biggest worry was with four-wheel-drive cars because "they will shoot past you and cut you off and you have to hit your brakes. And hitting brakes in the snow is not a good thing."

Clayton, N.M., Police Chief Scott Julian said his town is expecting more than a foot of snow. He was worried drivers passing through town to Colorado or Texas might decide to take their chances with the storm only to find that "they get 10 miles out of town, they can't see in front of them, and they get stranded out there."

Employee, 48, shoots 4, self at LA-area office (AP)

IRWINDALE, Calif. ? A man who shot four people, killing two, at a utility office east of Los Angeles before turning the gun on himself was a 48-year-old company employee from Southern California, authorities said Saturday.

Investigators identified the shooter as Andre Turner of Norco in Riverside County and ruled that his death was a suicide, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Larry Dietz told the Associated Press.

The two other men killed were Henry Serrano, 56, of Walnut and Robert Lindsay, 53, of Chino, Dietz said.

Two other shooting victims, a man and a woman whose names were not released, were in critical condition at a hospital, the Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

All five people worked for Southern California Edison in the same area of the same building at an office park in Irwindale, a small industrial city east of Los Angeles, authorities said. Authorities have released no information on a possible motive.

A phone number listed in Turner's name rang unanswered Saturday morning.

Horrified employees barricaded themselves behind locked doors and hid under desks Friday afternoon as Turner walked through the office firing a semi-automatic handgun, authorities said.

"This is one of the most horrible days in our company's history," said Edison International Chairman and CEO Ted Craver.

Four of the victims were Edison employees and one was a contract worker, authorities said. Police could not confirm media reports that at least two of the targeted victims were believed to be company managers.

The office complex and nearby schools were locked down as the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's SWAT team responded to several 911 calls.

Turner and Lindsay were found dead at the scene, and Serrano died at a hospital, authorities said.

No gunfire was exchanged after officers arrived, and police believed Turner acted alone

"As far as we know there was one shooting suspect, period," Baldwin Park police Capt. Michael Taylor said.

In the hours after the shooting, police cars, ambulances and fire trucks surrounded the building, and dozens of workers emerged with their hands over their heads.

The complex is surrounded by a fence and patrolled by a security guard. Employees need a security card to get into the building, said Gil Alexander, a spokesman for Southern California Edison. About 230 employees work in the building where the shooting took place, and about 1,100 employees work in the complex.

The utility's office is in a complex of buildings that also includes a business called California Lighting Sales.

Cindy Gutierrez, the controller for that company, said employees there didn't hear gunshots and didn't realize anything was amiss until building management announced over the intercom that everyone should stay indoors.

Two nearby schools were locked for about two hours after the shooting and no one on the campuses was hurt.

Irwindale is a city of about 1,400 residents in the San Gabriel Valley, 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is home to the Irwindale Speedway auto racetrack and large rock and gravel quarries.

Southern California Edison is one of its largest companies, employing 2,100 people.

Video: Romney steps up attacks on Gingrich

>>> thank you. now to politics and fresh fireworks in the republican presidential race. mitt romney is showing no signs of letting up his attack on front-runner newt gingrich insisting the former house speaker is too, quote, zany to be president. chuck todd is nbc's political director and chief white house correspondent and joins us now. chuck, good morning.

>> good morning, ann. the republicans meet tonight in what is their final scheduled debate before the iowa caucuses . judging by how aggressively mitt romney has gone after newt gingrich this week, it's going to be lively.

>> what's wrong?

>> mr. gingrich we are here to protest your speech today!

>> reporter: one way to gauge which republican is the front-runner? the number of protesters who show up at your event.

>> we are outraged!

>> reporter: in iowa city a loud group of protesters delayed the start of newt gingrich 's speech at the university of iowa .

>> okay!

>> reporter: at the same time, a much smaller group protesting mitt romney 's new york city fundraiser was more sedate.

>> thank you for the destruction of our economy. thank you.

>> thank you all.

>> reporter: it is another bit of evidence gingrich is the front-runner and may be why romney used an unusual word to pick out what he believes is gingrich 's key vulnerability -- temperament.

>> zany is not what we need in a president. zany is great in a campaign. it's great on a talk radio . it's great in the print. but in terms of a president we need a leader. a leader needs to be someone of sobriety and stability and patience and temperance.

>> reporter: gingrich was attending a brain science seminar and jabbed back.

>> i think a brain science initiative is a way of helping human beings . i'll let him decide if it's zany. they should run their campaign the way they want to. i'm going to run my campaign the way i want to.

>> reporter: gingrich also responded to the latest nbc news/" wall street journal " that showed him with a large lead in the primary but struggling against president obama .

>> i'm about where reagan was against carter at this stage.

>> reporter: gingrich 's rise appears to be troubling some of the biggest republican leaders in congress. speaker john boehner who was in the house leadership with gingrich in the '90s tried to stay neutral.

>> like all big figures they got some great ideas then they have some other ideas. it would be hard to describe newt as not conservative. i'm not sure he is as conservative as some people think he is, but newt is a conservative.

>> reporter: romney disagreed with that.

>> this is a person who has a very questionable record when it comes to leading conservative principles.

>> reporter: romney , who has struggled to appeal to tea party republicans nabbed the endorsement of one of the more prominent tea partiers from the 2010 campaign failed delaware delegate christine o'donnell who said the perception of romney as flip flopper isn't an issue for her.

>> that is one of the things i like about him because he has been consistent since he changed his mind.

>> a little more evidence that the establishment is rallying against gingrich . the conservative national review penned an unusual editorial today and wrote, we think it is important to urge republicans to have the good sense to reject a hasty marriage to gingrich which would risk resulting in acrimony. the magazine didn't endorse any of the actual remaining candidates, just against gingrich .

>> to think, chuck, we're just getting started.

>> oh, yes.

>> thank you so much.

>>> let's check the other top stories of the morning. natalie

Obama: Troops leaving Iraq with heads held high (Reuters)

FORT BRAGG, North Carolina (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama welcomed home some of the last U.S. troops from Iraq on Wednesday, marking a symbolic end to the nearly nine-year war that strained America's armed forces and damaged its standing worldwide.

Addressing soldiers at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, home of the 82nd Airborne Division, Obama stopped short of declaring victory in Iraq but called the winding down of the conflict "an extraordinary achievement."

"It is harder to end a war than to begin one," he told about 3,000 soldiers gathered in an airplane hangar as they punctuated his speech with cheers and hollers.

Despite lingering questions about whether the United States should have invaded the Middle Eastern country, the last American troops "will cross the border out of Iraq with their heads held high," Obama said.

"Of course, Iraq is not a perfect place. But we are leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq, with a representative government that was elected by its people," he said. "We are ending a war not with a final battle, but with a final march toward home."

As of this week, there were about 5,500 U.S. troops left in Iraq, down from more than 170,000 at the height of the war that Obama's predecessor George W. Bush started in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Michelle Obama, speaking just before her husband, injected a hint of campaign rhetoric by crediting the president for winding down the war. "He's kept his promise to responsibly bring you home from Iraq," she told the Fort Bragg soldiers.

Leaving Iraq fulfills a pledge that helped Obama win the presidency in 2008 and allows the White House to focus more on Afghanistan as well as economic worries at home, where the high jobless rate will be a major concern for voters next year.

But critics have accused Obama of ending the war hastily to suit his re-election campaign, warning the U.S. departure could embolden insurgent fighters as well as Iraq's neighbor Iran.

UNPOPULAR WAR

Mitt Romney, a leading Republican contender for the 2012 presidential race, said in an open letter to Obama on Wednesday that "words of welcome to our returning soldiers is not enough" and called it "a disgrace" that veterans of the Iraq war face unemployment several points higher than the national rate.

And John McCain, who ran against Obama for the presidency in 2008, said this week he found it "a bit presumptuous" for Obama to take credit for a war he opposed.

Obama owes his White House tenure in part to his opposition to the Iraq war, which grew unpopular in the United States when military fighting morphed into sectarian violence and it became clear that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was not hiding weapons of mass destruction and supporting al Qaeda militants as the Bush administration had claimed.

As an Illinois state legislator, Obama gave a stirring speech in 2002, warning that invading Iraq would plunge the United States into a "dumb war." He used his anti-war stance to distinguish himself in the Democratic presidential run-off from Hillary Clinton who voted in Congress to go to war in Iraq.

In office, Obama moved quickly to scale back what his aides had dubbed "Bush's war" and to shift the military's focus to Afghanistan and its border with Pakistan, which he called the neglected battleground in the fight against al Qaeda.

Commentators now see that conflict as "Obama's war" and believe his presidency will be judged more on the outcomes of the Afghan campaign than on developments in Iraq, especially after the U.S. killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden earlier this year.

In Fort Bragg, Obama thanked soldiers and their families and said he was confident the U.S. departure from Iraq as well as the eventual transition from Afghanistan would leave the United States in a better position overall.

"Because of you, we are ending these wars in a way that will make America stronger and the world more secure," he told the troops.

Sgt. Major Millard View, who served in Iraq every year since the war began in 2003, and returned to the United States in April, said it had been "a tough road" for troops who had to keep the peace and also help rebuild a broken country.

"The average soldier had to be a soldier on the one hand and city mayor on the other hand," he said.

Following up on its Japanese release of the Circle Pad Pro over the weekend, Nintendo has stated that it will release the accessory to the US exclusively through Gamestop on February 7th with a retail price of $20. Though still relatively unknown in American gaming circles, the Circle Pad Pro is cited as running for 480 hours on one AAA battery, which is nothing to sneeze at. Nintendo has stated that upcoming games will need to be optimized for the device but suggest that it can bring tighter controls to titles such as Resident Evil: Revelations and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Also, it makes your 3DS mildly huge. Click the break for the full PR and a quick video guide of the Circle Pad Pro's features.
